On Tuesday, Express Scripts notified that it is about to resolve its contract dispute with the biggest health insurers in the United States, WellPoint Inc. In addition, it claimed that the WellPoint has significantly increased the chances of lodging a lawsuit and expressed confidence that the companies have enough potential to settle their dispute.

Hurricane Irene loss estimate raised to $4.3 billion

The latest estimates of catastrophic losses from Augusts Hurricane Irene project total property damage at $4.3 billion, with the worst damage in New Jersey and North Carolina.

Property Claims Services increased its estimate by 18% since its first tally in September, according to published reports. The hurricane was the first to hit the U.S. coastline in three years.

The PCS report found that damage was reported from South Carolina to New England, with about 855,000 insurance claims, each averaging about $5,000.

PCS pegged damage in New Jersey at $915 million, with North Carolina close behind with $900 million in losses.

Technology Takes Center Stage for Auto Insurers: Towers Watson Survey

The growing pressure on auto insurers to support improved driver safety and to bring claims inflation and prices under control will make technology increasingly central to competitiveness, according to global professional services company Towers Watson.

“Already, the recent expansion in companies offering usage-based insurance (UBI) policies, based on in-car telematics devices, is putting those companies without a UBI proposition at risk of eventually being left with the ‘bad’ risks, particularly among younger drivers,” says Tony Lovick, director of analytics for Towers Watson’s DriveAbility UBI program.

But this is just the beginning, according to Lovick.

S&P Issues Stable Outlook for U.S. Life Insurance Industry

S&P announced in a report this week that it would be maintaining its stable outlook for the U.S. life insurance industry. This announcement should help insurers breathe a sigh of relief after the credit ratings agency announced that it issued credit rating downgrades for multiple banks on Tuesday.

S&P, New York, published a report this week called U.S. Life Insurance 2012 Outlook: Solid Capital and Liquidity Support A Stable Outlook In The Face Of Macroeconomic Headwinds, which was published in RatingsDirect and appears in the companys Global Credit Portal.

In the report, S&P issued the life insurance industry a stable outlook, stating that it reflects the companys expectation of continued strong capital and liquidity, and moderate investment portfolio losses.
