Pew Research: Adults as likely as teens to text while driving

Auto insurance rates can go up as more motorists experience accidents, an occurrence that is compounded by people being distracted while driving.

One of the ways that vehicle operators may be distracted is by using mobile devices to text while driving. While the problem has focused on teenagers behind the wheel, a recent report shows that even adults are busy typing away while navigating the road.

According to a survey from the Pew Research Center, 47 percent of adults who use text messaging said they have done so while operating a vehicle. When taken to the adult population as a whole, 27 percent of people take part in this potentially dangerous habit.

That is about even with the 26 percent of teens in the country who said they’ve used text messaging when driving, showing that the phenomenon is not limited to younger generations.

As governments recognize the hazards tied to texting and driving, more states are passing laws to crack down on the practice. For example, the Department of Transportation recently reported that Louisiana has made it a primary offense, which means people can be pulled over if they’re spotted by law enforcement representatives.
